About Me
Laura Mayo
Throughout my life, therapy has been a secure, safe haven for me, and this is the core of what I aim to offer my clients. For almost two decades, I have worked with people across the lifespan, from children to older adults, and with individuals, couples, and families.
As a registered social worker, my approach is to focus on understanding emotions as a way of creating change and new ways of relating to both others and oneself. I help my clients make sense of their relationships and emotions, and how they experience attachment. I am interested in helping people heal as a couple, as a family, or with their individual challenges.
I am an Emotionally Focused Therapist (EFT), which was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and her team over the past 30 years. EFT helps people understand the patterns that have gotten them stuck and coming into therapy. It is an evidence-based therapy. Research on EFT shows that people benefit from greater awareness of their emotions; distressed couples become more accessible, responsive and engaged with each other, the ingredients to secure attachment; families benefit from repairing old wounds, thereby promoting resilience and more secure attachments; and individuals have a deeper understanding of how their emotions came to be, thereby helping them to expand how they see themselves and others, creating new opportunities to be in the world.
